Day #46 - Mixed feelings
What mixed feelings this reminder brings up. It was a moment I was proud for completing a huge mission - completing my doctorate. It was also a moment of massive relief. It was a moment of gratitude for the people who helped me including supervisor, family and peers. It was a moment of anxiety that the reviewers would be ruthless. It was a moment where I felt like a weight had lifted off my shoulders. It was a moment of uncertainty about what exactly was coming next.
What's the point of this ramble? Feelings rarely happen in isolation. We can accept all feelings that arise - welcoming them even if they're in conflict with each other. Allow them to just be. Then, it's our opportunity to choose which feelings are relevant and useful to attend to for how they will enable us to be at our best in the moment and into the future.
The challenge is - many of us fixate on uncomfortable feelings believing we need to 'fix' them. This is partly due to a bias we have for attending to feelings that threaten our sense of safety.
So, just know that this can and likely will happen. Then, acknowledge that we can make space for our feelings instead of simply reacting to what feels strongest or most difficult. That will give us a moment of pause to open our mind and eyes to other feelings that are present. And with that pause we can choose which feelings are useful to accompany our action.
"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." Viktor Frankl
